What Is Guar Gum?

A natural thickening agent derived from guar beans (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba), primarily grown in India and Pakistan. Used as a thickener, stabilizer, and emulsifier in foods, pharmaceuticals, and industrial applications. It can absorb large amounts of water, forming a viscous gel.

Mechanism of Action

Guar gum is a galactomannan polysaccharide that forms a highly viscous solution in water. It slows gastric emptying and nutrient absorption, which can have beneficial effects on blood sugar control but can also cause significant digestive side effects. In the 1990s, guar gum diet pills (Cal-Ban 3000) caused esophageal and intestinal obstructions, leading to hospitalizations and at least one death.
