What Is Sucralose?

A zero-calorie artificial sweetener approximately 600 times sweeter than sucrose. Made by chlorinating sucrose (replacing three hydroxyl groups with chlorine atoms).

Mechanism of Action

Sucralose is largely unmetabolized and excreted unchanged. However, recent research (Schiffman et al., 2023) suggests that sucralose-6-acetate, a metabolite and trace contaminant, may be genotoxic in vitro. Other studies suggest potential effects on gut microbiome composition and glucose-insulin responses when consumed with carbohydrates.
